Vomela and the 5 Rs of Sustainability
As part of the Vomela network of printing companies, we share the same corporate commitment to sustainability and environmental awareness. Below are the ways that all Vomela companies strive to cut waste and maximize efforts to protect our environment.
We refuse to buy or accept products that can harm our people, our facilities, and our environment. We practice minimizing the waste of critical resources by carefully selecting our resources. We also focus on alternatives to chemical solvents, choosing water-based options. We have transitioned from solvent-based to UV, Latex, and Aqueous-based inks in our manufacturing process.
We always try to use less whenever possible. This is not only relating to physical supplies! For example, we recently worked toward reducing the amount of energy to heat facilities. In addition, our new LEED-compliant headquarters building in St. Paul, Minnesota was designed to improve energy savings, water efficiency, CO2 emissions, and indoor environmental quality. We're also installing solar panels on the new building.
We also build to order with our on-demand custom box maker (video also below). This reduces corrugated costs by sizing each box specifically for each job with minimal waste.
We continue to transition to more sustainable packaging. The RanPak machine, an eco-friendly alternative to bubble wrap, is a recent tool toward this goal. We are also replacing single-use items with reusable ones both personally—like water bottles, lunch bags, and grocery bags—and professionally—like having our printer cartridges refilled instead of buying new.
Vomela has a formal Sustainability Committee working with customers and our supply chain to find ways to repurpose as many goods and packages as possible. We are also in the process of obtaining Sustainable Green Print Certification for our facilities.
If the first four Rs are not doable, then recycle! Recycling shows us all the things we dispose of while giving us the opportunity to rethink future purchases. We recycle everything possible in our shops: paper, plastic, metal, and glass. We aim to make every employee aware of what can and can't be recycled, and encourage use of recycled materials whenever possible.
